The California State Assembly amended a bill that would have allowed municipalities to use bike lane designs that have proven successful in other major the cities. The proposed bill in its original form would have allowed for municipalities to use guidelines outside of CalTrans, like the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide. These innovative bikeway designs have been implemented and successful in major cities including, Washington D.C, New York, and Chicago. Although the revised bill does not completely limit planners from trying new bike lane designs, it does not give the blanket authorization bike advocate organizations were looking for. The new bill says that CalTrans must develop an experimentation process and each project must be approved through CalTrans before it can be implemented.
